About the Refugee and Immigrant Tutoring Program
Recipients of the Grand Prize in the 2025 SFU Student-Community Engagement Competition!
The Refugee and Immigrant Tutoring Program is a free, online tutoring resource that works towards creating equal access and opportunity to education. Our goal is to reach as many students as possible by creating a welcoming, encouraging, and comfortable environment where students receive support in individualized approaches.
Why We Started this Program
Moving to a new and unfamiliar country is a considerable decision which proves more challenging with the lack of resources available for academic support. Therefore, we established this program to decrease these barriers and support a smoother, more successful transition into the Canadian school system and workforce.
A Problem We Know Personally
The lack of free educational support for new Canadians has been experienced by family members of our team and our community partners. For one of our founding members, her grandparents did not have the finances for extra educational assistance to support her mother and her siblings through school.
Free Support That Makes a Difference
Our program exists to fill that gap, offering a free and accessible resource to aid in student comprehension of a new curriculum. As equity is such an important topic, our program works to increase this amongst the diverse population of the lower mainland.
Our Community Partners
We’re proud to collaborate with local school districts, immigration support organizations, and community groups to ensure every student has access to the resources they need. These partnerships help us reach families more effectively, provide culturally responsive support, and create a stronger, more inclusive learning environment for all.
